We recently learned that Nelson had a permanent tooth coming in between two other teeth. That's normal except there isn't any room for that tooth. At first they thought surgery would be the best alternative, yikes. Then the orthodontist though he could make room for the tooth. Making room means an appliance in the mouth! hello can anyone say painful! Putting in the appliance has been a process, the first week they put spacers between his teeth to make room for the brackets, Nelson was miserable and just hating life. The second week they took the spacers out and found a cavity and wouldn't proceed until it was taken care of. So we went to the dentist, he ended up having three cavities and then they pulled the tooth that was holding the spacer. Hence he never even needed the spacer and went through a week of pain for nothing!!!! We went back to the Orthodontist and they put brackets on his back two teeth and then added a appliance to the top of his mouth. Needless to say poor, poor, Nelson.
Would that appliance be an expander? All 3 of our older kids have now had it. I have heard (from Dr Kelson, the elder) that it is a problem in the Whiting family, too small mouths... Who knows...
